Science Kit Descriptions


The BOCES #1 Science and Technology (BoSAT) Center provides subscribing districts with:
 a "hands on minds on" interdisciplinary science curriculum that emphasizes the process skills of:

- a teacher in-service program where teachers are provided learning theory, teaching strategies, classroom management and assessment 

- a "menu" approach to elementary science where each school district selects the science kits that best fit their curriculum 

- a student centered program where students are active learners and are provided opportunities to design experiments of their own choosing

Color and Light - Students use prisms to investigate the full range of colors in white light, the visible spectrum. They experiment with subtractive color mixing and discover the primary pigments.

Comparing and Measuring - Students explore concepts needed for comparing and measuring. Students use non standard and standard units such as unifix cubes and measuring strips to measure height, width and distance.

Earth, Moon, and Sun - Students investigate the solar system using a solar system model and simple lessons addressing length of day, month and year. Moon phases and sun location are also addressed.

Ecosystems - Students create their own terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems and gain an understanding of ecological systems and their interdependence.

ELS - NYS Education Department approved science materials are provided for teachers to administer the Elementary Science Performance Assessment. BoSAT also provides training for administration and scoring of the exam.

Energy, Machines, and Motion - Middle school kit supports 5 classes instead of one. Students investigate simple machines, transfer of energy and motion through a series of hands on science labs. Students even build and design a miniature roller coaster.

Experiments with Plants - Students conduct experiments to test how nutrition, water, space, light and other essentials affect the growth and seed production of plants.

Floating and Sinking - Students, through a variety of hands-on experiments, explore the factors that influence whether an object floats or sinks.

Food Chains and Webs - Students explore Food Chains & Webs. Students explore plants as food producers. Students classify animals as primary, secondary, or teritiary consumer, or decomposer, based on what it eats.

Food Chemistry - Students investigate the nutrient content of some common foods through a set of specific tests and learn how the nutrient content of their food affects their health.

Forces and Motion - Students are introduced to force, motion and friction through the six simple machines. Students build and test all six simple machines through a series of hands on lessons.
